When it comes to lawn decisions – the options are endless. On the North Shore and the Northern beaches, there is plenty to consider when it comes Lawn selection. Sir Walter buffalo, Kikuyu, Couch Blends, Zoysia; the list goes on and when it comes to lawn and lawn care it can often seem like an overwhelming task.

When considering grass selection in Australia, there are differences that make certain varieties more suited for certain conditions. Aesthetics, growth, lawn mowing frequency, drought tolerance, soil type, climate and maintenance are all important factors to consider.

Our Upper Cut Lawn Service team will look at a number of factors when it comes helping you select the best choice for your landscape design.
Climate
Living on or near Sydney’s northern beaches which can mean changeable conditions a hardy lawn selection is important so that it can withstand changes.
Soil Type
The pH of your soil will also impact the longevity and hardiness of your lawn’s ability to grow. A well drained slightly alkaline (pH of 5.5-6.5) soil is usually the best for most grass species to grow. If you live closer to our northern beaches, your soil may contain a higher level of sand - our Upper Cut Lawn Service Lawn Mowing experts can help recommend ways to improve your soil prior to planting.
Lawn Usage
If your planting grass for little ones to roll around on, a variety that is less likely to cause itch and scratch is preferential. A space to let the grass grow and cover a wider area needs a hardier variety of grass. Our Lawn care experts at Upper Cut Lawn Service will help you choose a lawn that’s tough enough to suit your needs.
Lawn Types

Buffalo – As far as classic Australian back yard grass varieties go, buffalo is the front runner. Durable, easy to maintain, lower watering requirements and slower growth means less regular lawn mowing. Buffalo grass varieties tend to have wider leaf blades which can mean a scratchier grass however varieties such as Sir Walter Buffalo grass can still provide a softer lush lawn that is perfect for families.

Couch – if you’re looking at a grass that has similar low maintenance properties to buffalo, but a finer blade, look no further than couch grass varieties. Couch is a quick growing grass, so may need more regular mowing to keep it tamed however; it excels in hot humid conditions. Speak to our lawn care specialists as Couch varieties can have a tendency to over grow quickly if not regularly edged and maintained.

Kikuyu – less common these days however kikuyu grass was a mainstay in Australian backyards for a long time.
It is a hot weather lover and nice and soft underfoot however it tends to have an ability to grow… and grow and grow and grow, which means the mower is almost always on permanent rotation. Check with our team at upper cut lawn services to see if this variety could suit your needs.

Zoysia – while this variety has been around for quite a period, only recently has it been used more and more in Australian back yard gardens. Zoysia is very tolerant to less ideal soils particularly saltier conditions which can make it a fantastic variety for our Northern Beaches clients.
No matter what your property type or location – on the northern beaches, or the upper north shore, our experienced backyard landscape design specialists can help offer you the best advice to suit your situation.
